Countless ships have been lost at sea. And quite distinct from visions of treasure chests filled with gold coins, the true value of a wreck is the opportunity to peer into this time capsule and learn what life was like at that time. Ship wrecks can provide us with information on where and how a ship was built, who were its sailors and how they lived, what were they carrying for cargo, and possibly what caused the wreck.
Ocean Outreach has received a donation of a wreck site, which we have initially begun assessing. We plan to seek partnership(s) with educational institutions, modeling an excavation program after terrestrial academic archeological programs and engaging graduate and post graduate students in working the site every summer season. The winter months will be spent preserving, cataloging, researching, and planning the next year’s project. The end results could be an underwater archeological site at 200 plus feet deep that is fully excavated, documented, and displayed.
